Starlink Mini is now available to rent. You can hire the Starlink mini for short and long-term periods.
At EPIRBhire, we have used Starlink since mid-2021 to run all our office and entertainment needs. We use approximately 300GB per month. Starlink is fantastic as it is fast and reliable. The latency period is short, unlike the previous NBN SkyMuster system. The typical latency for SkyMuster was 677ms, whereas Starlink is 60ms, which gives a speed similar to 4G. (*There are 1,000 milliseconds in a second.)
Starlink Mini Stats: What size is the Starlink Mini? It measures 300mm x 260mm x 40mm and weighs 1.2 kg. It comes with a 15mtr cable. The power supply weighs 170gm, with Input:100-240vac drawing 1.6A and Output:30vdc 2.0A providing 60W. Our suggestion is to use a small pure sine-wave inverter from your battery.

Our thoughts on Starlink – Is it the right choice for your trip?
Using Starlink for families on the remote outdoor caravan holiday will give you all the services you have in the suburban lounge room. If you need full internet to run your business while away in a remote location, this will change your life.
A few facts. Starlink does not draw much current. If you assume 50w to 70w for the Starlink Mini, you won’t have power drain issues. The original Starlink Gen 1 and RV required 240-120vac power, but the Mini only requires 12-48vdc. We recommend using the 240vac power unit supplied with the Mini and plugging that into your inverter. We have found that it performs better with fewer errors over a range of conditions than using a direct DC power supply.
The Starlink Mini will not perform as designed if the signal is interrupted by trees and hills. It requires a good 360-degree view to maintain peak performance. If you have trees it will drop out regularly.
We would not recommend relying on the Starlink Mini for emergency communication. To successfully connect, your phone, the Starlink, and the power supply must survive the accident. You must also be in a clear area and have the time and ability to set it up.

Our suggestion for emergency communication is the following:
1. You must carry a PLB (EPIRB). It will only cost you $88 to rent, or we sell ex-hire units for under $300 – this will save your life.
2. If you have the cash, we suggest hiring a Satellite phone or a Messenger device such as the Garmin Inreach, Zoleo, SPOT or similar products.
The cost to buy or hire a Satellite phone is close to the price of a Messenger device and much less complicated for the first-time user.
Keep it simple and keep yourself safe – take a PLB and a Satellite phone when travelling to remote areas.
3. If data is needed while remote, the Starlink Mini is exceptional.
